The Squishy Squares Story

All it takes is one little spark to start something great!  My name is Kayla, and my little spark of an idea grew into Squishy Squares!  During COVID-19, our family chose to have my brother and I stay home for virtual school.  St John’s Virtual School has been very flexible, and has allowed me time to think about and pursue my passions.

Throughout the pandemic, my family and I have watched a lot of food programming – The Great British Baking Show, Nailed It, Milk Street, America’s Test Kitchen, Cook’s Country, Pati’s Mexican Table, and anything with Alton Brown.  

Also, my mom had told my brother and I that we needed to find a project we were passionate about.  She wanted us to be inspired and learn something new. 

Back in February 2021, I figured it out!  We were watching the Good Eats Episode “Puff the Magic Mallow.”  I said to myself, “I could do that!”  My mom and dad both supported the idea, and we made our first batch of marshmallows for our family for Valentine’s Day.  My family thought they were delicious!  

That one batch turned sparked the idea for Squishy Squares!  I wanted to sell the most delicious marshmallows ever created. I also knew that I wanted to help people in my community.  I know that I am safe in my home and with my family, and I wanted other kids and women to feel safe too.   That’s why I chose to donate 25% of my net profits to the Betty Griffin Center.  

Now, I make traditional marshmallows, and experiment with and create seasonal Squishy Squares.  My family supports me and is helping me learn to be the best businesswoman I can be!
